No matter the destination...
I made my first cross country trip at the age of twelve. The feeling of open road and the excitement of finding new places never left me. In college I traveled Europe and North Africa, then paid my way across China teaching English. I've explored much of Mexico and parts of South America with a heavy pack on my back. I've been cross country now more times than I can count just to see what's over the next hill, and still, that joy from adventure has never left my soul.
It was my experiences traveling and meeting new people that inspired me to open a hostel in my own town back in 2005. I was broke, working a bum job, but taking a small business course. I was able to apply for loans and lines of credit and really lucked out being in the right place at the right time to buy a big old house. Having stayed in scores of hostels before I made notes as I went on what worked and what didn't. I used that base to build what I hope you will find to be a home away from home. A place that is built by backpackers for backpackers.
We remain true to our roots. We are a small friendly operation that prides itself on a communal atmosphere and pleasant amenities. It's an intimate spot, but one that you can find privacy if you wish. Our front and back porch are set up for hanging out and having a beer, soda, or sweet tea. We wave to the neighbors. We host bonfires and cookouts in our backyard.
Being raised in a large Italian family I learned that food is where family and friendships are forged. We organize hostel sponsored potlucks, and provide basic breakfast everyday. Our comfy couches in the common room and nice picnic table provide ample inside opportunity to talk to other travelers. Here you may arrive a stranger, but you'll leave a friend.

The Name -
Bon Paul and Sharky were born long ago and both died in time consecutively thereafter. They are buried beside the French Broad River underneath an old maple tree, side by side to watch forever the water passing. Bon Paul and Sharky were two gold fish, best of friends and best of friends to me. To their memory, this hostel has been named.
